Tree of variable size, dense crown and thick, dark trunk. Its dark green leaves and whitish underside, velvety in appearance. The flowers are born in spring grouped in hanging bunches of yellow-ocher color, and their fruits (acorns) can be sweet or bitter.
Holm oak is the most characteristic species of Mediterranean forests. The subsp. ballota usually forms pure masses and lives where the differences in temperature are more pronounced (continental climate), better supporting frosts and prolonged droughts.
