Adenium obesum

Common name: Desert rose, adenium

Type:Cactus or succulent plant

Nurseries and wholsalers Adenium obesum:Veraleza

Description:

It is a shrub of African origin, less than 1 m high, with beautiful pink flowers, ideal for growing succulent plants. It has a huge tuberous stem under the cylindrical branches. If properly cared for, Adenium obesum is capable of blooming in summer several times at short intervals.

Its trunk is tubular and thickened, taking large dimensions for the size of the plant that serves to reserve water. The flowers are tubular at their insertion and somewhat flared, of an intense pink color, the interior of which is white. Its leaves are small aovate somewhat lanceolate of an intense green color with well-marked white veins.

Culture:

It is grown in very bright places, in fact it prefers full sun in warm places or indoors with very good lighting. It is a somewhat delicate plant, as it does not tolerate temperatures below 10ºC.

The soil of the Adenium obesum likes it rich in nutrients, but well drained because, as a crass, it does not support excess moisture. A little more nutritious than cacti and succulents, since having leaves is in a more demanding link.

It is necessary to water sparingly during growth (every 10 or 15 days) and keep almost dry in winter, at a temperature between 12 and 15ºC and in a very bright situation. If you keep the plant dry in winter, it will lose its leaves, but nothing happens, it goes to rest.

Multiplication:

It can reproduce by seed, although this is not the most common way, in this plant the graft on Oleander (Nerium oleander ) is usually used, thus it gives a fast flowering, although it loses its enormous and thickened trunk. When it is grown by means of seed or by cutting of stem without leaves, in summer, it has to be placed at 20ºC with background heat. It is easy to propagate Adenium obesum from suckers or shoots by cutting a sucker and planted in a sandy and moderately humid compost, although the cutting must first be allowed to heal, leaving the cutting in a dry place.

Applications:

Little used, but ideal for rockery or collections of cacti and succulents.
