Aruncus dioicus

Common name: Goatee, Bride Feathers

Description:

Perennial and rhizomatous plant that is commonly cultivated in European countries, being Aruncus dioicus the best known species of the genus, it may become deciduous in very cold climates. This plant is one of the most attractive plants in a perennial bed, due to its large leaves and abundant flowers. Blooming in July, although its ornamentation continues until autumn, as it has a wonderful autumnal yellow color.

These plants have a herbaceous habit in cold climates, although they may take on a bushy habit with a rounded shape that can measure between 1 and 2 meters in height. The leaves are alternate, pinnaticompound, imparipinnate, leaflets serrated acuminate.
This plant is very adaptable.

As its scientific name indicates, it is a dioecious plant (male and female flowers on different plants) with flowers gathered in panicles. Male and female individuals of the dioecious plant look very different. The white, fairly scattered flowers of the male plant are more beautiful to many people, while the flowers of the female plant are greener-yellow in color and are more compact, not as conspicuous. The male plant is more conspicuous, even after it blooms, because the flowers do not set fruit and it maintains its beautiful appearance. When isolated male or isolated female specimens are cultivated, the seeds are not formed, but that does not mean that it cannot be reproduced, since the goatee can also be propagated vegetatively. In the event that both sexes are present, the seeds spread and begin to appear all over the place.

Cultivation and care:

A goatee doesn't need a lot of care, especially after it's established, in fact it grows best when no work is done. Large plants can hold their own long after the garden they are a part of is gone. Its preferred habitat is moist, loamy, fertile soil, preferably in semi-shade. It can withstand sunlight as long as the soil is kept moist. It tolerates very low temperatures, being then a deciduous plant, which regrows without difficulty in spring.

If it is in the sun it needs very humid soils.

  Multiplication:

By division, although it is somewhat complicated, or by seeds in spring

Applications:

Very decorative plant for shady gardens, with good soil texture and plenty of moisture, used for flower beds and as a solitary plant. Perfect for a woodland or waterside garden. Since thanks to its flowers it gives the area a very decorative cloudy appearance.
