Common name: Arrayán, Mirto

Description:

The myrtle or myrtle is a native shrub of southeastern Europe, growing in sandy soils and close to the sea. It is an evergreen and aromatic shrub of up to 4 m in height and compact foliage. The leaves are lanceolate, opposite, and quite hard, dark green on the upper side and lighter on the underside, with transparent oil glands.

Its white, solitary flowers 1 to 2 cm in diameter are very fragrant, composed of 5 petals and 5 sepals, blooming in spring. The fruit is a rounded edible berry 1 to 1.5 cm in diameter, dark metallic blue when ripe. It has many seeds, which are dispersed by the birds that feed on them.

Care:

This shrub needs sunny or slightly sunny places, although it can grow in the shade, although its flowering will be less abundant. It needs loose and cool soils, although it supports drought. It can be pruned and shaped, which is why it is widely used as a hedge plant or for topiary art.

Applications:

Widely used as an ornamental plant. The leaves, flowers and fruits are rich in aromatic oils, which is why they are used in perfumery. Since ancient times it has been famous, as it was considered a symbol of love and beauty.
