Innovation and technology development to ensure the future of sustainable agriculture in Spain

Representatives of the main political parties, experts in the agri-food sector, farmers and breeders took part in the conference ?The future of agriculture in Spain? in which it reiterated the importance of innovation and the development of the technology to ensure the future of sustainable agriculture in Spain.

Organized by the Alliance for Sustainable Agriculture (WINGS), the Agricultural Forum Foundation and the Business Association for the Protection of Plants, AEPLA, the day counted with the intervention of the secretary-general of Agriculture, Fernando Miranda, who noted that one of the main threats facing Spain is the climate change and environmental sustainability. ?The scientific and academic world provide solutions to these challenges as the conservation of soil, water and biodiversity. For this reason, the innovation, the R & D and knowledge transfer in biotechnology, plant breeding, precision agriculture, in addition to the optimization of the tools, plant health, are technological solutions to fundamental and that our country is in a position to exploit, he explained.

In the Day's Debate was presented the report on ?The future of the agricultural sector Spanish?, an in-depth analysis in this regard, carried out by PwC Spain, whose director, Jordi Esteve, highlighted the characteristics of the Spanish agriculture, its diversity of cultures, orientation to export, resilience to the economic crisis and the need to minimize the environmental impact.

The president of WINGS, Pedro Gallardo, said the main objectives of this association, of which he is a member FEPEX, and which are primarily focused on narrowing the emotional gap between urban and rural areas, responsible for the serious lack of knowledge of the basic functions that meet the farmers and ranchers, as is to ensure the production of healthy food, safe and affordable.

Finally, involvement of representatives of the main political parties, which participated in a discussion with a large number of people attending, coinciding, there are four areas relevant to the future of our agriculture: the ecological transition and environmental sustainability, innovation and technology and the regulatory environment necessary to enhance the scope of economic and social agriculture, and reverse the depopulation in the rural areas of our country.

The conference ?The future of agriculture in Spain? was held in the Institute of Engineering of Spain, in Madrid, and also counted with the collaboration of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), the National Association of Agricultural Engineers (ANIA), the above-mentioned Institute of Engineering of Spain and Henar Communication.
