Spanish exports of flowers and live plants have started the year with a slight increase of 1% , which places sales at 35.7 million euros in January compared to the same month in 2023, as reported by Fepex . This data represents stagnation in practice, since there had been a chain of two years of increases of 26% and 17% in January .

According to Fepex, the live plant experienced a slight decrease of 0.9% in January, compared to the same period last year, standing at 25.5 million euros. Within this group of products, international sales of outdoor plants decreased by 6%, reaching 8.9 million euros, as well as exports of trees and shrubs, by 23% (5.7 million) and cuttings ( 7%), standing at 3.5 million euros. The indoor plant rose by 33%, with 4.1 million euros.
In January, the export of foliage decreased by 3% (3.2 million), while the export of cut flowers increased by 2.8% (5.9 million), due to the growth of rose bushes, with 956 million euros (+34%). Bulbs also increased by 135%, reaching 981 million euros.
Imports on the rise
On the other side of the balance, the improvement in Spanish imports of flowers and live plants has been due to the notable increase in cut flowers, which with 9.9 million euros has represented 18% more than in January 2023.
According to data provided by Fepex, the rose was the most imported cut flower, with 4.7 million euros (+23%), although the biggest increase was that of the carnation, with 42% more (1.1 million euros).
Regarding the import of live plants, it decreased by 3%, with 10.5 million euros. The import of bulbs also fell by 5%, standing at 1.9 million euros and that of foliage also fell by 19% (1 million euros).
