Mercabarna-flor predicts a massive Sant Jordi 2024 with more roses sold than last year. This was explained by the Deputy Mayor of Economy, Finance, Economic Promotion and Tourism of the Barcelona City Council and president of Mercabarna, Jordi Valls, during the press conference in which the rose sales forecast and the main news were presented. of this Sant Jordi and in which the president of the Mercabarna-flor Wholesalers Guild, Miquel Batlle, also participated; and the representative of the Mercabarna-flor School of Floral Art, Sílvia Mir.

Mercabarna-flor professionals expect to sell about 7 million roses , 20% more than last year, as it is the first day without a pandemic or restrictions caused by Covid-19, and which falls on a working day. This fact means that part of the citizens do not go away to spend the weekend away, and therefore go out more to experience it in their city. This makes each person get into the habit of buying more than one rose to give, in addition to the couple, to other family members and friends, or to decorate the house.

Since January, Mercabarna-flor wholesalers have already been receiving orders from companies, associations or the hospitality sector, among others, to give gifts to workers and clients and to decorate their establishments.

Of the total number of roses sold in Catalonia, Mercabarna-flor will market around a third , that is, more than 2,300,000 units. Sant Jordi is one of the most important events for the Catalan floral sector, a day in which 30% of the total roses sold in Catalonia during the year are sold.

Roses can be purchased from 4 euros and, depending on the ornamentation, the price will increase.

Origins

Regarding origins, the forecast is that of the total roses sold in Mercabarna-flor, 63% will come from Colombia, 15% from Ecuador, 20% from Holland and 2% will be of national origin, over all from Valencia.

Most marketed varieties

This Sant Jordi, around a hundred different varieties of roses will be on sale at Mercabarna-flor. Although up to 30 different varieties of red roses will be marketed, the stars of Sant Jordi will, once again, be the Freedom , a variety imported from Ecuador and Colombia and highly appreciated for its showiness, resistance to transport and durability, and the Red Naomi . This variety, which began to be marketed in 2009 and is produced in Holland and Colombia, is also widely accepted for its beauty, with a very large corolla and petals of an intense red color. Catalans prefer Freedom (75% of sales), above all, because of the cocoon shape of its corolla. On the other hand, the Reed Naomi (15% of sales) stands out for its more open corolla.

News and trends: Kokedamas and miniature rose bushes

The trend is to give more and more flowers and plants that last and are wrapped with natural and sustainable materials.

It is expected that Kokedama rose bushes will have a lot of impact this Sant Jordi, because it is a very natural and sustainable way of giving roses, without plastic or packaging. Kokedamas are plants with roots prepared by florists and covered with moss. In this way, the moss acts as a 'natural container' for the plant itself. This treatment makes the plant last a long time.

It is also expected that there will be many sales of miniature rose bushes, with red roses, although they can be found in many colors.

No plastics, no papers: vegetable packaging

In recent years, it has been detected that the trend in decoration of the Sant Jordi rose was evolving towards presentations with increasingly natural materials. Plastics are hardly used in flower shop packaging and year after year, recyclable materials (wood, paper, fabrics, etc.) have become increasingly popular.

This year, the trend is to wrap the rose with entirely vegetal materials. Thus, for example, a leaf can act as a wrapper, a bow or an ornament to accompany the flower.
